Web Africa Wages War on Spam!

We’re making your email inboxes safer by waging war on Spam, viruses, and malware!  Our arsenal consists of content-filtering web proxies, default and custom filters, and in-house preventative measures. [...]

We’ve set up filters to target unwanted and inappropriate content from being received while still letting our clients get the mails they’re expecting.  Our proxies are getting rid of harmful Bots and Trojans.  Our Spam filters are targeting unwanted emails through the use of lists and unique signatures.

So what are these “lists” all about?

  • BLACKLISTING – an email Spam filter keeps a list of addresses that are considered blacklisted.  The inbox will be prevented from receiving mails from the blacklisted addresses.  A popular technique for implementing blacklists is DNS Blacklisting (DNSBL).
  • GREYLISTING – a method used to defend email inboxes against Spam.  A mail transfer agent (MTA) using greylisting temporarily rejects emails from unrecognised senders.  If the mail is legitimate the originating server will send again and if sufficient time has passed the mail will be accepted.  If the mail is sending to thousands of addresses it will most likely be recognised as spam and it is doubtful that it will be resent after greylisting.
  • WHITELISTING – An email whitelist is a list of contacts that the user deems are acceptable to receive mails from and aren’t sent to the trash folder.  Spam filters that come with email clients have both whitelists and blacklists of senders and keywords to look for in mails.

Web Africa has whitelisted most of the USA, Europe, and South Africa from greylisting.  This will help prevent problems we’ve had with some greylisted mail filters and will ensure that we receive all incoming emails.

The rest of the world (mostly Asian countries) haven’t been removed from greylisting due to associations with Spam and being known as locations with high amounts of Spam offenders.

International providers are able to provide their own signatures for Spam filtering that we are able to incorporate into our own anti-Spam initiatives.  These signatures help us to identify and prevent customers receiving Spam, viruses, and other malware from recognised and repeat offenders.

What are we doing for your own inbox?

We have default Spam filter settings that you’ll find are applied to your email inbox from the start of your relationship with us.  Once your account is set up you’ll be able to create your own custom Spam filter settings.

We have a cluster of servers that are load balanced to ensure for high availability on the mail system.  If a mail fails to be delivered to one server it is sent to the next where it will be checked and filtered.

Don’t worry about lost or blocked emails not reaching your inbox either.  We can back up 2 weeks worth of emails on our servers.
