Web Africa’s 67 Minutes
In celebration of Mandela Day on Monday 18 July, Web Africa supported this amazing worldwide initiative by giving back to our Woodstock Community in the form of a charity drive for the St Anne’s Homes for Destitute Mothers and Children. Their mission is to see women with children living free from abuse, poverty and discrimination by offering the world a model of care and social empowerment.
Web Africans contributed to this cause generously by donating groceries, toiletries, baby goods and other household items, as well as a gift card to allow the House Mothers to purchase any other items they may need to cater to the needs of approximately 17 mothers and their children who stay on the property at any given time. Another amazing gift on its way is a 25GB Home Connect account for an unlimited period of time. The benefits that this gift will provide these women and children are endless!
Four members of Web Africa’s Culture Team, including myself, visited the NGO in order to drop off the donations and to meet the wonderful men and women who devote their lives to helping others; and what a truly humbling experience this visit turned out to be. We met a precocious little two year old named Nicky who immediately took a liking to us and lit up when we pulled out our camera. When I asked how long she had been with St Anne’s, the Crèche Manager mentioned that she arrived there when she was only four days old. This made me realise that not only was St Anne’s providing shelter and protection for those in need but they were also devoting their time and effort to educating and shaping the minds of their impressionable young residents.
St Anne’s also provides their destitute moms with a skills training programme which includes everything from Basic Computer Literacy classes to Sewing, Beading, Jewellery Making as well as Cooking and Catering classes. We were amazed to see the intricately crafted pieces of jewellery made by their ladies which are also on sale to the public in the St Anne’s Gift Shop. We chatted to Joy Lange, the Director of St Anne’s who told us that the organisation exists because of the charity of others saying that “St Anne’s volunteers are the ambassadors of the organisation” and we were able to see why, especially since all four of us left with a great feeling of well-being borne out of the spirit of charity.
Being good is commendable, but only when it is combined with doing good is it useful. ~Author Unknown
