Wha’ Be International Talk Like A Pirate Day?

International Talk Like a Pirate Day was created by John “Ol’ Chumbucket” Baur and Mark “Cap’n Slappy” Summers , of Oregon, in 1995. They proclaimed that on 19 September each year everyone in the world should talk like a pirate.

Summers says that the day resulted from a so-called sports injury. During a racquetball game between the two, one of shouted “Aaaarrr!” in pain and Talk Like A Pirate Day was born.

Until 2002 it was simply an inside joke between friends, but the holiday gained traction when the pair sent a letter about their invented holiday to Dave Barry, a humour columnist, and today the event is being celebrated internationally. The success of the holiday is likely due to the fun, non-restrictive nature of the idea, since it carries no trademarking and is open to creative interpretation.

Talk Like a Pirate Day has been celebrated in the past with hidden Easter egg features in games and on websites. In 2014 Reddit added a pirate theme to their website, while Facebook introduced a pirate-translated version of its website on Talk Like a Pirate Day in 2008.
