Don’t let Load-shedding get you down.

These are dark days we’re living in… no really, with Eskom’s load-shedding leaving us all without electricity, the candle-lit evenings are pretty dark. Dark and boring.
Let’s face it, after those first few evenings of singing “Kumbaya my lord” around your tea light candle, playing a few heated games of Monopoly with your cat and trying to convince your kids that cereal for dinner is a treat, you are probably over it.
Don’t despair!
Here is how you can survive load-shedding without missing a single episode of your favourite flick, and keep the family happy, too.

How to Download movies and series for load shedding:

What you’ll need…

To Download:

You will need to perform your downloads while the power is ON, so some planning is required.
• A mobile device (Phone or tablet)
• A great Wifi connection
• An active Netflix, DSTV Now or Showmax account

When the power is off:
• A fully charged phone or tablet

Pro Tip: Check your load shedding schedule and make sure your phone or tablet is fully charged before the power cuts out. This is a good time to invest in a decent power bank (if you haven’t already done so) to keep you going through the dark times.

On Showmax:
• Download the Showmax app for iOS or Android on either your phone or tablet
• Open the app, sign in, and choose the title you want to download
• Click the “download” button
• You can select the file quality of your choice (Low, standard, Good, or High quality). Your HD and UHD options will use more space and data than the low definition option. Seeing as you probably already have an uncapped Fibre line from Webafrica and data use isn’t an issue – it all comes down to how much space you have on your device.

When the power is out later:
• Open the app and go to “downloads”
• Choose the show you want to watch and tap it
• Once you start watching an episode or movie, you have 48 hours to finish watching it (and you have 30 days to watch the title from the day you download it)

On Netflix:
• Download the Netflix app for iOS or Android on either your phone or tablet
• Open the app and sign in
• Find the episode or movie you want to download (if it is available for download the “download” icon will appear next to it)
• Click the “download” icon

When the power is out later:
• To watch your shows, open the app, and click on the “downloads” icon (you don’t need to be online but you do need to be logged in, so stay logged in!)
• Tap “play” and away you go
• You can download up to 100 titles at a time
• Titles which are expiring from your device in under 7 days will display the amount of time you have left to watch them

On DSTV NOW:
You need to be an active DSTV subscriber to use the DSTV Now service.
• Sign up for DSTV Now
• Download the DSTV Now app on your phone or tablet
• Open the app, log in and navigate to the “Catch Up” section
• Find the episode or movie you want and tap the little cloud icon on it to download it to your device

When the power is out later:
• Open the app
• Tap the “downloads” icon, and enjoy your shows

Good luck, and don’t forget to stock up on candles!
