When I was 16 I wanted to be a professional gamer. Family and friends could never call my home during the weekend because my phone was always engaged – due to the fact that I was hooked up to the internet for three consecutive nights via my 33.6k modem (R7 weekend deal) training my skills on CS1.3. I always wanted to make it into the best clans and win cool prizes at big lans, and finally attain worldwide gamer glory! Nowadays I just get destroyed on CS:GO…

Back then I thought I’d do game dev… never chased that dream, but the programming has become my life. I also didn’t chase down the electronics/robotics type stuff as a career, but it’s still my hobby.
Henrico Solomon
Since i received my first desktop, i wanted nothing more than to write my own programs. At 16, i was somewhat conflicted by what my parents wanted me to be so i ended up applying for Med School like they wanted – though i never stopped reading programming how-to’s. After 5 tedious years of med school i decided to that it wasn’t for me – so I turned my attention to my life-long dream… I had to endure countless criticism and ended up working at a bar for a year in a half to pay for my studies… Its been little over 3 years now… I just got a job as a programmer and I’m finishing my B.Sc Computing… I’d say 16 year old me would be pretty psyched if he knew how life would turn out doing what he loved…
JeremyWilkinson

I have always been interested in computers and electronics and always wanted to pursue a career in this direction. These days I am more of a hobbyist due to better opportunities elsewhere but really enjoy technology and all of the associated benefits. Hopefully I will get back on track over the course of the next few years.

For my Dad to stop drinking and grow old with me. Did not happen. BUT STILL A GREAT DAD.

At 16 I didn’t know what I wanted to DO or BE once I was done at school, but at 16 ………………. I wanted to be popular (I had friends but I wasn’t in the clique). I wanted to be ‘sports star’ (I did many sports and was okay, but I wasn’t a star). I wanted to be an academic (no matter how hard I studied and tried, I wasn’t). I wanted a normal family (not a divorced one). I dreamt of being an adult and doing what * I * wanted, having a great job, earning good money, traveling, buying a car, a house, eventually having a family of my own. At 16 I wanted a life quite different from what I had, and I didn’t want to be 16! Now, 30 years on, I realise that at 16 I had a small group of REAL friends, I was part of a sports TEAM and contributed to its success, I was a GOOD SCHOLAR and learned much, I was still LOVED despite divorce, and being an adult is quite different to what you envisage it to be at 16.

At 16, I wanted to be a rockstar!
I am a musician, playing the guitar and keyboard (and whatever else I can get my hands on).
So, perhaps I’m a rockstar in my own right π
Was also keen on being a chef (this didn’t pan out as planned [excuse pun!])
C’mon WebAfrica, make my weekend by giving me a helicopter!
Mike
I wanted to be a “computer programmer” to write some games like the good ol ZX Spectrum ones I was playing at the time. I was into my tech back then and tinkered all the time. I didn’t follow that exact route but did end up in IT Support still.
Rowan David Buhrmann
Hey all :D! Well this is pretty easy for me π I am only 21 now so thinking back to 16 isn’t very hard at all! Sadly enough, as most 16 year olds are, I had sooooo many “great” ideas about what I wanted to be and do in my life. So basically I started off as being a race car driver. That probably stemmed from when I used to play scale-electrics when I was much younger (sadly it broke… or I probably would still be playing it!). I have always loved intense sports where speed plays a big role. So getting into a car and driving really fast would have been totally awesome! Sadly, the parentals were not on my side with this idea…
I then started thinking about owning a pet shop:). Slightly strange and different from racing fast cars around tight corners (which to be honest I still want to do), but I have always been intrigued by fish, in particular Lake Malawian Cichlids. So I actually started breeding these Cichlids from home (in one of my parents spare rooms). Surprisingly enough I actually made a fair amount of money out of this venture! It did help that my parents didn’t charge me for water usage, electricity or room rental :x!
This then started me on my career into Biology, to which I am currently doing be BScHons in Biological Sciences at UKZN Westville! So frankly I have met a large chunk of what I dreamed about when I was 16 :), with the exception of driving fast ‘on a race track…’.
To be honest there probably was a few other random things, like breeding snakes and never having to do another day of school ever again… But sadly those didn’t come true…
Thanks for reading what has become a part of my life:P!

I always had huge aspirations as a child, knowing I would one day change the world through my code and innovative ideas like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Mark Shuttleworth. I remember starting to learn Programming in Linux/PHP/XHTML/Java at the age of 16, and thinking I was the best PHP developer ever!
I remember creating our first MMORPG game with a couple of friends that ended up with over 100 active players on! Trying to get people to help with hosting (Didn’t know about Web Africa back then) and thinking we where the best thing since sliced cheese.
As I grew up, I learned that reality is cold and hard and live doesn’t owe you anything. I realized that the path to changing the world is long and hard and wouldn’t happen overnight. And, although I still believe I can change the world one day, I spend every day working on new innovative projects where I can learn and become the man I dreamed of becoming as a 16 year old boy.
I want to thank Web Africa for their great support and hosting solutions that allow me to build on that young boys dream and slowly but surely helping people change the world, one small project at a time! I know it wouldn’t have been possible without Web Africa! You guys are great!

My dream was to someday have my own website, play games and
work on computers.
Today I am glad to say that I have managed to get several
websites hosted through my Web Africa account, play games on a regular basis
and fix computers for my friends and colleagues around me.
Thank you Web Africa for allowing to tick off one item on my
bucket list.
Happy Sweet 16!

My Dream was to fly helicopters and be a pilot, but landed up in IT and Working with law enforcement so close enough to the action thrills and spills, I guess dreams can still become a reality in life. Keep Dreaming…. π

My dreams & aspirations when I was 16 was to either become a farmer or work with computers. Since we didn’t have a farm my next best bet was computers. Today I’m living it.

I was dead set on owning or managing a Formula 1 team, having had visions of working my way up through the ranks from pit mechanic to race engineer all the way to managerial greatness. Alternatively I would have been one of the world’s best mechanical engineers, specifically involved in the development of high performance cars. Formula 1 teams would consult me on all things internal combustion! I believed I could do all of this without ever having to work a desk job, wearing a stupid grey suit, carrying a briefcase – it was literally a nightmare for me! 16…so young and naive…or was I?
